Development of the Cancer Journey Guide
The Cancer Journey Guide was developed in response to qualitative research conducted with 17 cancer patients to better understand the needs people experience throughout their cancer journey. The research identified key areas where additional support was needed, including access to services and education, medical navigation, social and emotional support, and connections to other important community resources. The findings from this research helped form the foundation for the Guide.
The Guide was then developed with the active participation of a group of eight cancer patients, who contributed their personal experiences, perspectives, and recommendations to each section. Their involvement helped ensure that the information reflected the real-life needs and challenges faced by individuals navigating cancer.
The completed Cancer Journey Guide was reviewed and revised by Kehau Matsumoto, a cancer survivor involved with the State of Hawaiʻi’s cancer initiatives. Dr. Frances Conde, who leads the survivorship clinic at Straub, also provided professional recommendations prior to publication.
The Guide was subsequently shared with the Quality of Life Action Team as part of the State of Hawaiʻi cancer coalition efforts, further connecting the resource with statewide work focused on improving the quality of life for people affected by cancer.
In 2025, the Cancer Journey Guide underwent another comprehensive update and revision. Oncology nurse and breast cancer survivor Elana Brennan volunteered her expertise to review and update the resource, including the addition of QR codes to make current information and resources easier for patients and caregivers to access.
Through a grant from Papa Ola Lōkahi, the Cancer Journey Guide was expanded to improve access for Hawaiʻi’s diverse communities. The Guide was translated into Tongan, Tagalog, ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, and Spanish, helping make this important cancer information and support more accessible to individuals and families in the languages they know and understand.
From its inception, the Cancer Journey Guide has been shaped by the voices of cancer patients and survivors, together with the expertise of healthcare professionals and community partners. It was created not simply as an informational manual, but as a practical resource to help individuals and their families navigate the cancer journey with greater knowledge, connection, and support.
